Physical Activity and Health-related Quality of Life among CKD Patients at a Tertiary Hospital in Bangladesh

Abstract
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) significantly impacts patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL), with physical activity being a potential mitigating factor. This study explores the relationship between physical activity and HRQoL among CKD patients in a tertiary hospital in Bangladesh. To assess the impact of physical activity on the HRQoL of CKD patients in a tertiary hospital setting in Bangladesh and identify barriers to physical activity within this population. A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 143 CKD patients at a tertiary hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Data on physical activity levels were collected using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), and HRQoL was assessed using the Kidney Disease Quality of Life Short Form (KDQOL-SF). Statistical analyses were performed to determine the correlation between physical activity and HRQoL scores. The study found a significant positive correlation between physical activity levels and HRQoL among CKD patients (p < 0.01). Patients engaging in regular physical activity reported higher scores in physical functioning, vitality, and mental health components of the KDQOL-SF. However, several barriers to physical activity were identified, including lack of awareness, physical limitations due to CKD, and socioeconomic constraints. The study examines into how socioeconomic and demographic factors affect the KDQOL scale and quality of life. The findings indicate that age has a significant impact on all HRQoL composite scores, with SPKD having the greatest score and MCS having the lowest. Kidney disease has the greatest impact and burden, whereas the symptom/problem list sub-scale has the lowest summary score. The only sociodemographic characteristic that has a significant correlation with IPAQ is education.
