Guidelines for Editors of CJBEHM

The Canadian Journal of Business, Economics and Health Management (CJBEHM) has a set of guidelines to ensure submission quality and integrity. Editors are encouraged to review the detailed guidelines to streamline the review process and maintain the journal’s high standards. Please see the full guidelines for more information.

1. Conflict of Interest (COI) Checks

  • Pre-Assignment Review: To ensure impartiality and avoid bias, editors should conduct thorough conflict of interest (COI) checks on reviewers before assigning manuscripts.
  • Declaration Requirement: Editors should require all authors, reviewers, and themselves to declare any potential conflicts of interest related to the manuscript.
  • Avoid Assigning to Conflictual Reviewers: Manuscripts should not be assigned to reviewers with conflicts of interest, such as recent publications with the authors, shared affiliations, or personal connections.

2. Ensuring Reviewer Independence and Impartiality

  • Confidentiality: Editors must ensure that reviewers maintain strict confidentiality of the manuscript. Any breach of confidentiality must be handled promptly and appropriately.
  • Balanced and Fair Assignments: Editors should assign reviewers with expertise in the subject matter of the manuscript, ensuring that no reviewer has a personal or professional relationship with the authors or their work.
  • Avoiding Bias: Editors must remain mindful of potential biases, such as personal, institutional, or financial influences, that could affect reviewer decisions. Reviewers should be chosen based on their expertise rather than personal relationships with authors or editors.

3. Transparent Decision-Making

  • Clear Criteria: Editors must ensure that decisions regarding the acceptance, revision, or rejection of manuscripts are based on clear, objective criteria including scientific quality, originality, and relevance to the field.
  • Timeliness: During the review process, editors should keep a thorough approach while making timely decisions. Delays in decision-making should be communicated to authors with an estimated timeline.
  • Respect for Reviewers’ Input: Editors should carefully consider the feedback provided by reviewers, including both positive and negative comments. When making decisions, editors should explain the reasons for their decisions, including reviewers’ comments.

4. Handling Ethical Issues

  • Plagiarism and Misconduct: Editors should act promptly if any ethical issues arise during the review process, including plagiarism, data fabrication, or unethical conduct. Editors must take appropriate actions, such as notifying the authors, alerting relevant authorities, and considering retraction or correction if necessary.
  • Dealing with Competing Interests: If an editor has a personal or professional relationship with an author that could affect their objectivity, they should recuse themselves from handling that manuscript and assign it to another editor.

5. Maintaining Transparency in the Publication Process

  • Clear Communication with Authors: Editors should provide authors with clear instructions and feedback during the submission, review, and revision process. Communication should be timely, respectful, and constructive.
  • Peer Review Process Transparency: Ensuring the peer review process is transparent whenever possible, with clear communication to both authors and reviewers, while adhering to best practices in ethical publishing.
  • Open Access and Availability: Editors should be aware of the journal’s policies on open access, copyright, and publication fees, ensuring these are clearly communicated to authors and reviewers.

6. Dealing with Appeals and Complaints

  • Fair and Transparent Appeals Process: Editors should have a clear process for handling author appeals or complaints about the review process or editorial decisions. Authors should be given the opportunity to provide additional information or clarifications, and a fair decision will be made in response.
  • Handling Reviewer Feedback: In cases where authors disagree with reviewer comments, editors should mediate in a neutral and transparent manner, ensuring that all parties understand the rationale behind the final decision.

7. Confidentiality of Reviewer Reports

  • Non-Disclosure of Reviewers’ Identities: Editors should ensure that the peer review process remains anonymous unless the journal follows an open peer review policy. Reviewers’ identities should not be revealed to authors without consent.
  • Handling Reviewer Reports: Reviewers’ comments must be shared with authors accurately, maintaining the original intent of the feedback without any alterations or distortions.

8. Commitment to Scientific Integrity

  • Ensuring Quality and Integrity: Upholding the highest standards of scientific integrity is essential in ensuring the publication of research that contributes valuable knowledge to the field. It is equally important to prevent the dissemination of false, misleading, or unethical work.
  • Monitoring Publication Ethics: Editors should keep up to date with the latest ethical standards and best practices in publishing, ensuring the journal adheres to these norms and any relevant guidelines set by organizations such as COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics).

9. Promoting Diversity and Inclusion

  • Diverse Perspectives: Journal editors should endeavour to promote diversity among authors, reviewers, and editorial boards. This includes working towards a balanced representation of geographic, gender, and professional diversity to ensure varied perspectives are reflected in the journal’s publications.
